Do you want to "deban" it and turn it into a military-looking AK? Or do you want to keep it as-is and shoot it? How badly do you want a Chinese AK? (They're nice, but expensive simply because of the import ban). Ultimately it's a question of whether it's worth it to you. Now I was lucky with the initial purchase price at a local pawn shop, so I could justify the extra expense (plus it's easier to do it over time, a couple bucks here, a couple there) so you would have to consider whether you wanted to sink the extra coin into your rifle or not. All together I believe I paid around $400 for these upgrades. This involved sourcing a Bulgarian front sight and gas block, having them installed by a gunsmith, then purchasing a cleaning rod and a newly made stock set from Ironwood. So I decided to have mine converted to a "Type 66" clone with no spike bayonet. There isn't a great deal of difference between them and a MAK90, though one thing to look for is a "purple" bolt carrier and bolt, which will mean that it was made at the Chinese /6\ arsenal (even if the trunnion has been scrubbed, like mine.) The main disadvantage to them compared to the MAK90 is that the furniture is all rubbish, and would need to be replaced if doing a conversion, where with the MAK you can at least keep the hand guard. I picked up an NHM90 this past fall and went through the conversion process, so I might be able to offer a little insight.įirst off, they are VERY nice rifles.
